Recycle any brand of beauty empties through MECCA & TerraCycle
Beauty Product Recycling Program
Recycling beauty empties is an often overlooked but crucial practice that can have a significant impact on the environment. Many consumers are unaware that makeup, skincare, and perfume bottles can be recycled, leading to the accumulation of vast amounts of waste each year.
Mecca has partnered with TerraCycle to create a sustainable solution for recycling beauty empties. This partnership is a step toward fostering a more eco-conscious beauty industry and encouraging consumers to embrace recycling as part of their routine.
Beauty packaging is an intricate combination of practicality and design, with complex materials including plastic, paper, and glass. Its smaller size and mixed components make it especially difficult to recycle.
The Problem
Mecca has partnered with TerraCycle® to provide an alternative for customers looking to sustainably dispose of their beauty empties.
What can you put in a TerraCycle bin?
Shampoo bottles and caps
Conditioner bottles and caps
Hair gel tubes and caps
Hair paste plastic jars and caps
Lip balm tubes
Soap dispensers and tubes
Lotion bottles, tubes, dispensers and jars
Shaving foam tubes (no cans)
Lip gloss tubes
Mascara tubes
Eyeliner pencils and cases
Eyeshadow tubes
Concealer tubes and sticks
Fragrance and perfume bottles
Rather than empty glass bottles ending up in landfill, fragrance lovers can drop off their empties in TerraCycle® collection bins located in MECCA stores nationwide.
The Solution
Now in its fifth year, this program continues to grow in popularity – and in impact. Since the beginning of their partnership with TerraCycle, both teams and customers have saved over one million beauty empties from ending up in landfill.
Measuring the Impact
Everything collected is sent to TerraCycle to be sorted and processed into raw materials that can be reused instead of being sent to landfill.
Plastics are separated by number, melted down, and turned into pellets to produce new products.
Metals are separated by type and smelted into ingots for reuse.
Glass is cleaned, sorted by colour, crushed, and melted to be used in new glass products.
What happens to your empty packaging once it’s in a TerraCycle bin?
Ready to say goodbye to your empties? Just pop them into a TerraCycle bin near the registers or hand them to a team member at any MECCA store across Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Note: Packaging must be empty or almost empty. TerraCycle will not accept any items that still contain product, so please rinse your jars and pots before bringing them in.
How Can You Participate?

Together, with informed choices and collective action, we can reduce waste and support innovation in recycling.
It’s time to recycle—because every empty bottle counts.
